Volunteer positions

Cavy Cuddler

Why are Cavy Cuddlers needed? Often we receive animals into our care which have had minimal to no handling or that may have come from backgrounds of mistreatment of neglect. Many of these guinea pigs go onto foster care for handling but those that don't remain at the shelter for adoption. In order to give these guinea pigs a better chance at being adopted sooner our Cavy Cuddler program has been put into place. While awaiting adoption at the shelter even guinea pigs that are quite placid still will be sitting in their enclosure for an amount of time before being adopted and our cuddlers help to give these guinea pigs some time out of their cages and some one on one attention.

Who are we looking for? For our Cavy Cuddler program we are looking for people that can easily follow instructions and that can connect, handle and communicate well with animals that come from an array of backgrounds and in turn, that may be difficult or easy to handle. You will be someone who can either work on your own or in a small group.

Cavy Cuddlers also take part in a bathing/grooming program. All guinea pigs deserve to be clean and well groomed prior to being adopted.

What's involved? All Cavy Cuddlers are shown how to bath and groom the guinea pigs at the shelter alongside a nail clipping demo. Quarantine procedures for guinea pigs in each area of the shelter will also be shown to you. Although the risk of an outbreak of disease is small, procedures still need to be put in place in the case one animal is carrying something that another is not.

All grooming and bathing equipment is supplied by the shelter. For Cavy Cuddling, towels and piggy pouches will be supplied for you (alternatively you can purchase your own) to safely handle the guinea pigs with alongside some fresh fruit and veg and a playpen as needed. Cavy Cuddlers will be designated to either bathing/grooming or cuddling depending on what is needed most on the day of volunteering.
