ACS Brisbane Shelter Struggling at Max Capacity ACS Brisbane Shelter is in urgent need of extra funding. The shelter is currently struggling with 120 guinea pigs at the shelter many of whom are pregnant, several are on foster care, and another 30+ guinea pigs plus some mice are due to arrive at the shelter by the weekend. ACS Brisbane Shelter Manager 'Jessica' (along with all other ACS Shelter Managers) funds the shelter entirely with money from her own bank account. ACS does not receive any form of government funding. Jessica has eaten in to all her savings and is struggling to keep up with the funds needed to supply constant hay, vegetables, bedding, grains and medical care/treatment to the large number of guinea pigs currently at the shelter. ' I have 12 guinea pigs in treatment and have had several large backyard breeding cases to deal with of late which has resulted in the excessive amount of guinea pigs that have been surrendered here to the Brisbane Shelter and many of the sows that have come through the doors are pregnant. Sadly my shelter has been struggling at near max capacity all year long this year I truly believe that our stats for surrenders have doubled that of last year possibly tripled as we now have two more ACS Shelters running and even they are struggling at near max capacity', said Jessica. ACS Brisbane Shelter is managed the majority of the time by shelter manager 'Jessica' with the much needed support of volunteers helping at the shelter on the weekend. ACS Brisbane Shelter is asking for a bit of relief from the financial struggle of late due to the amount of animals being cared for at the shelter! Your support during this time will be greatly appreciated. A couple of spare guinea pig water bottles / houses / beds if possible. Shed / Aviary / Gazebo / Cubby / Dog Run or similar ( Needed to store feed/hay. We are also urgently wanting to build or find some sort of aviary/pet run for some of the animals at the shelter. We have a large 6m x 3m we can use for any of the above although do not have the funds at present to purchase any of the above ). Bedding ( shredded newspaper, woodshavings, hay, recycled paper kitty litter ). Any Vegetable / Grass or Hay donations would also be appreciated during this time.
Appalling Case of Neglect in Sydney
Recently a volunteer who has stepped on board in the Sydney area, has had to witness one of the worst cases of neglect ACS has seen. After replying to an advertisement online Lyn went to pick up 8 guinea pigs who were being cared for by someone who had taken them from their previous home. The previous owner had ' dumped ' them on her doorstep. The lady could not afford vet care for the guinea pigs so was selling/giving them away online. Upon picking the guinea pigs up Lyn found that all 8 guinea pigs were suffering from fungal conditions, mites, impaction and all had cases of severe bumblefoot. ACS Brisbane Shelter manager ' Jessica ' was recently called by the RSPCA to help out the Brisbane Mouse Rescue with a case whereby more than 200+ mice needed to be rescued/collected from a family on Brisbane's Northside. CLICK HERE to watch video footage of our latest rescue mission.

Behind the scene - A typical backyard breeding case where animals are bred to be sold to the Pet Shops.
On the 30th May 2008 ACS Brisbane Shelter Manager 'Jessica' found a giveaway ad online for 14 guinea pigs. She enquired about the ad and luckily the owner was willing to hand all the guinea pigs over to ACS. Once Jessica was told about the guinea pigs disturbing history she realized that the guinea pigs needed to be picked up as soon as possible. The same day Jessica and two ACS volunteers drove to Durack to pick-up the guinea pigs. Click here to read full story...

Below: PIGNIC IN THE PARK 2007
On November 18th 2007 The Australian Cavy Sanctuary hosted our very first major awareness/fundraising event 'PIGNIC IN THE PARK'. The team were up bright and early for setup after an exhausting 6-8 weeks of preparations the day had finally arrived. Overall the Pignic was a fantastic success the sun was shining brightly upon the picturesque park grounds with a light breeze to keep the public and the piggies cool! The event turnout was larger than expected with people in attendance reaching anywhere between 500-800. Click here to read full report and to view photos from the day!
