ACS
was recently invited to a special day out. A visit to St Martin's
Nursing Home for 'Pat-a-Pet' day. A small team from ACS Brisbane
Shelter attended the day out with some of our most cuddly guinea
pigs for a wonderful morning of sharing and spreading some extra
joy with the residents.
ACS
Brisbane Shelter Manager Jessica said, 'this is something I've been
wanting to do for many years now. Their is nothing more fulfilling
than being able to share your passion and volunteer your time in
this special way. The visit was filled with many emotions and
I've taken something away with me from this experience that I'll
hold close to me for always'.
From
cats to dogs to birds to guinea pigs the morning was filled with
story sharing and lots of cuddling of the animals.
Their
were a few touching moments during the visit. ACS Volunteer
'Steve' was told that one of the gentlemen at the nursing home
barely ever spoke and showed little interest towards many things
in daily life. When Steve came to offer the man a cuddle of 'Chalie
Pig' his eyes lit up and with arms open wide the man was filled
with joy as he spent some time chatting and handling Charlie the
guinea pig.
Pictured left is a lady who didn't want to let dear 'Tuscany' the
guinea pig go. She felt a special connection with Tuscany and when
it was time to go it was difficult to say goodbye. The 88yr old
Italian gave little Tuscany many kisses before they had to part
for the day.
Volunteers Christina and also Brianna also visited a separate area
of the nursing home and spent time with some of the Dementia
patients. Flora the guinea pig also warmed someone's heart. The
lady spending time with Flora actually fell asleep holding her in
her lap.
By the
end of the visit their wasn't a dry eye amongst the ACS Team. The
visit was truly touching and we hope to do this again.
