At 7.00am on the
morning of 3 October 2010, Australian Cavy Sanctuary (ACS) management
regretfully had to make the decision to postpone this year's Pignic in the
Park event.
The decision to postpone the event was not taken lightly and was difficult
to make. Due to unpredictable weather conditions and the high likelihood
of continued rain throughout the day, a decision was made that would be in
the best interests of the organisation and stallholders involved.
Inclement weather was likely to result in a far smaller public turnout
than originally anticipated, which would have in turn resulted in serious
financial consequences for ACS. As a not-for-profit organisation, we were
not in a position to lose funds by proceeding with the event. Furthermore,
many of our stallholders may have also been affected financially, so a
decision was made early in the day to give them ample forewarning. It was
determined that it would be in the best financial interests of ACS and the
stallholders involved to postpone the event to a later date.
The health and wellbeing of guinea pigs is the paramount concern of ACS,
and as such we were not willing to risk the lives of our animals for the
purposes of the pignic. Guinea pigs that are exposed to the wind and rain
are at a high risk of developing upper-respiratory infections, which would
have affected not only ACS animals but animals owned by members of the
public. ACS believes that the decision to postpone further demonstrates
what the organisation stands for.
Vehicle and foot traffic in the park was also likely to cause significant
damage to the ground, for which ACS would have incurred a cost from
Brisbane City Council.
ACS sincerely apologise for any upset the postponement of the event caused
and hope and thank the public for their understanding.
We hope to see you at the rescheduled event and look forwarded to seeing
the park adorned with lots of flower power, people, pets and smiles! .
